These soft chocolate donuts are easy to whip up and topped with a shiny chocolate glaze. They’re so yummy you won’t mind that they’re baked, not fried!
You know what I realized has been holding my blog back? A serious lack of DONUTS.
If you know know me personally, then you know how I feel about donuts. Filled donuts, fried donuts, baked donuts, trendy bacon-topped donuts, croissant donuts–I love them all equally. As much as I like cake, donuts are my birthday treat of choice. Living within walking distance of three shops that sell donuts has significantly improved my quality of life.
That said, posting a donut recipe on here was long overdue. These soft chocolate donuts are the perfect introductory recipe; they’re quick to make, don’t require frying in hot oil, and topped with a shiny chocolate glaze.
How To Make Glazed Chocolate Donuts
Basic Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- Cocoa powder
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Granulated sugar
- Egg
- Greek yogurt (plain, 0% fat)
- Milk (for the donuts and the glaze)
- Vegetable oil
- Vanilla
- Espresso powder (optional, but really enhances the chocolate flavor!)
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips (for the glaze)
- Chocolate sprinkles (optional but not really optional because come on, you need sprinkles)
Tips for the best baked donuts
- Sift the flour and cocoa powder before mixing with other ingredients.
- Use room temperature eggs.
- Add a little espresso powder! This truly does enhance the flavor of the chocolate. I know it’s a little bit pricey, but it will last forever and make all of your chocolate baked goods that much more delish.
- To test for doneness after baking, carefully press your finger into one of the donuts. If the donut springs back when pressed, they’re ready. If it leaves an indentation, the donuts need a little bit more time in the oven.
- After glazing and topping with sprinkles, let cool for 30 minutes-hour to let the glaze set.
Small Batch Baked Chocolate Glazed Donuts
Ingredients
For the donuts:
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/4 tsp espresso powder (optional)
For the glaze:
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 2 tbsp milk
- chocolate sprinkles optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Grease a 6-slot donut pan with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
- In a medium sized bowl, mix together dry ingredients, including flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, espresso powder, and salt, along with your sugar.
- In a small bowl or glass measuring cup, mix together your wet ingredients: milk, egg (beaten), yogurt, oil, and vanilla.
- Pour your wet ingredients into the flour mixture, stirring just until combined and mixture is smooth.
- Spoon or pipe your donut batter into your donut pan–I typically use a spoon and even out the batter with my finger, but using a piping bag is much neater.
- Bake your donuts for 9-11 minutes. You'll be able to tell that they're done when you can press your finger into a donut and it springs back without leaving an indentation.
- After letting the donuts cool for a bit, make your glaze: melt chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl, microwaving for 30 second intervals and stirring in between. Add in your milk and stir until smooth.
- Carefully dip the tops of donuts in the glaze, top with chocolate sprinkles, then let cool again and enjoy!
